iPad – from an Apple Product Manager perspective

If I would (and I'd wish) be the Product Marketing Manager for the iPod product family I really had a great day and my future would look pretty bride in the coming month. Why is that? Well because my family got a new member that perfectly fits in my portfolio. The iPad is the missing peace next to iPod and iPhone and serves the "couch" consuming excellent, as well as positioning itself as eBook reader in competition to the Amazon Kindle and all the Netbooks out there - without being an actual Mac!

So, from a iPod Product Management point of view a great deal!

But what about if I would be the Product Marketing Manager of the Mac product family? Well, then I could read all the consumers wishes that came with the Apple Tablet idea, but I would not be in the position to have such a family member available. I have some kids like the MacBook Air or the MacBook, but they are pretty expensive stuff and they are not very "hot" in the last 12 month. And it looks like that my family will not get any "update" soon which gives me actually a pretty bad time, because all the attention and market share goes to my colleague dealing with the iPods.

I really cross fingers that Apple shifts its focus this year at any time this year back to the Mac family - they are really falling back to competition at the moment.

iPad – what has changed?

Well, not much. It is basically a huge iPod touch which optional comes with 3G and a special data flat deal in the US (and hopefully also in Europe in June/July). Apple simply copied the Amazon Kindle approach and combined it with their store capabilities - and named it iBooks. A nice technical asset is the powerful battery that last 10 hours of video or a month of standby. But that's it - no moon-landing, just another Apple device.

So - like said in my recent blog entry - they are only approaching the book industry and "killed" the Amazon Kindle market share.

P.S.: I like the keyboard dock - looks really awesome

Apple tablet – what will it change?

Everyone in the industry is waiting for 7pm CET today - when Apple is about to announce their "next big thing" (Businessweek Article). I haven't heard or read more rumors, strategies and consequences about a single device before - even the iPhone did not get that kind of amount of credentials. Why is that? Is it really a game changer? Can it succeed and change the mobile and media market as the iPhone did?

I think it will not! Even so I am an Apple enthusiast and love the gadgets they produce, I see only a few new things coming with that device and most part of that is already there for some time (even years):

  • Portable Touchpad in a proper size: At the Cebit 2004 I already played around with a great device from Fujitsu, which was around 1500 € at this time and fully supported and promoted by Microsoft. A portable display that connects via Wifi to your PC-Device and could also be used as screen itself. It was meant to be carried around and used on the consumers sofa as remote screen. I am pretty sure at this time it was simply "too early".
  • Reading ebooks and epapers: There is the kindle and various apps for smartphones (e.g. kindle reader on iPhone) that makes it already comfortable to consume text-books and articles on your portable touch device. Furthermore I really do not see the business case that consumer would be willing to pay for content they could get via any website. I am here with Jason from Techcrunch who showed off potential opportunities for content in his article (read here): eBooks and content that was exclusively available on paper will get a boost by the new channel for digital distribution and we will probably see a lot of great kindle and iSlate devices to support it. Nevertheless it will not save the news corporations and magazines - they really have to invent themselves completely new and find a way to distribute their premium content with added value.

So my prediction is that we will not see a "game-changer" today, but another Apple device that will fit perfectly fit into the Apple portfolio and boost the eBook market - let's keep it simple :-)

What is complex – or why do people fear of the unknown?

It is a simple viral spot - but it brings the actual excitement and fear of the people to the point:

  • Some cannot get enough of gadgets and information and are going to see the livecast of the apple announcement tomorrow
  • Some are playing farmville and talking to their friends on their "wall" in facebook
  • Some are afraid to use a google account and believe that email is the last step of digitalisation

History has taught that there will be always differences between "believers" and "non-believers" and that there is always fear of the new and unknown - that will last forever. Nevertheless - we are living in a very rapid time & we are only getting faster ... so get on board!

So mobilisieren Sie Ihre Mitarbeiter mit Smartphones – Computerwoche

See below the article Wolf Ingomar Faecks and me wrote about Smartphones in B2B (in german): http://www.computerwoche.de/netzwerke/mobile-wireless/1926748/

It summarizes the point of view how smartphones are getting a significant device within the workflows of enterprises and how they are able to add value to the already established communication tools. It is not only "another" computer - due to its special "personal" link to the owner it has much more sensitive meaning within corporate communication. The article observes as well the weaknesses of an integration into the corporate IT landscape as well as the security aspect. Furthermore we also stated the various differences of the mobile platforms and what that means for the choice for a specific platform. In the end we believe it will be only a matter of time until we also see the smartphones as user of the "cloud" for business related applications, rather then focusing on developing native business application stores. Enjoy reading :-)

Tagcrumbs launches location-based iPhone application

Press Release of Tagcrumbs:

Remember and share places easily with the new Tagcrumbs iPhone app

Berlin, January 12th 2010 – Tagcrumbs, the Internet platform for sharing your favorite places, is now offering a free application for the iPhone and iPod touch. The application can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store in seven countries, including the US, UK and Germany, at www.tagcrumbs.com/go/iphone.

The launch of the iPhone application is a response to the increasing popularity of location-based services offered by US startups such as Foursquare and Gowalla. However, Tagcrumbs is not a game with “check-ins”, but rather an application for travelers and place experts to create and present locations of their field of interest.

Get me to your iPhone – my personal iPhone App

After Techcrunch was writing about Appmakr (here) I was really keen to test their service and how fast they were able to bring an app to the iTunes store. What can I say - very fast ;-) Already last week they pushed my own app, build out of various rss-feeds to the market. So what - only rss-feeds?! Well, that's correct, you could easily build something more sophisticated within a web-browser - but the attention for apps due to their better usability/experience is still high and will only vanish when flash 10 and html5 finally hit the market. For the short success "hard-coded" mobile apps, especially for the iPhone, are still the first choice.

So - you wanna get mine? Here it is - for free of course! ;-) http://bit.ly/8HiPWo (itunes link)

It includes the blog, my twitter feed, the flickr timeline, my qype recommendations and youtube videos I uploaded. Have fun!

iPhone applications next level

We have reached a new level! A new level of iPhone app and their distribution. On one hand we are facing more and more in-app business cases whereby mainly the news corporations are trying to sell their content exclusive. In Germany almost all big Newspaper are having their own iPhone app today but just a view have started the in-app selling of content yet. We will see if this strategy is the succeeding one, but there is no doubt that a better usability mixed with exclusive content is worth while paying for most of the users.

Like the recent study of eMarketer (here discussed on mashable.com) points out, the new generation of smart phone users are spending more then 50% of their time using apps - and increasing. As well there is a very intensive public discussion if the public television news channel should be allowed to offer a free app of their famous program (Tagessschau App - discussed here in german). This simply shows that an app is NOT only an app anmyore, it is crucial for business and not only mobile business.

There are already strategies in place, based on the experience of the recent years, which explains the specific way how to succeed with an iPhone application (see article from Rob Gonda here) - as well a sophisticated sign that we reached a new level.
